Pauline Oliveros

Pauline Oliveros was composing electronic music back in the 60's. She designed and improvised with the Expanded Instrument System - an electronic signal processing which is still being used today. This is a great video that explains her process of 'deep listening',, something we could all do with learning and using a bit more in the world. I love her idea of sound designers working with city planners in order to create a more beautiful sounding world.

Here is a great article on Pauline - https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/listening-as-activism-the-sonic-meditations-of-pauline-oliveros

Sounds carry intelligence. If you are too narrow in your awareness of sounds, you are likely to be disconnected from your environment. Ears do not listen to sounds; the brain does. Listening is a lifetime practice that depends on accumulated experiences with sound; it can be focused to detail or open to the entire field of sound.
