HOT & HEAVY WORKSHOPS
Hot & Heavy is a queer-led, multi-artform live performance premiering at Midsumma Festival in January 2026. We are seeking queer (and queer ally) dancers and dance enthusiasts to join our free workshops and feature as the local ensemble as part of the show.
About the show:
Part performance, part dance floor uprising. An immersive experience. Created by Gimuy/Cairns-based The Ironing Maidens (Melania Jack, Patty Preece and Leigh-Anne Vizor) Hot & Heavy is an aural, visual and sensory experience that invites you to lose yourself, go deep and shake free. A surge of immersive sound design and augmented interiors, dance, aerials, a live ironing board electronic band and banging beats. MORE ABOUT THE SHOW HERE
What is the Heartbeat Ensemble? The heartbeat of the dancefloor!
We’re inviting local dancers (18+) to join the performance experience. Apply below to join the workshops where you’ll learn choreography that will be performed live in the show—from the dancefloor.
The choreography is tailored to the selected ensemble, and we welcome dancers of all experience levels. We’re building a local dance ensemble specifically for this show, and by applying, you’re putting yourself forward to be part of the performance. Both workshops will be different, but both will teach the show choreography.
Workshops are free, this is a volunteer opportunity - there’s no performance payment. This is a chance to be part of a queer production and perform in the show. The main vibe we’re after is queer-loving movers and groovers, up for causing a joyous riot to the banging beat of a broken down washing machine.
Benefits of joining this opportunity:
+ rare chance to work with award-winning queer artists from The Tropical North/QLD
+ connect with queer community to create something meaningful and impactful
+ gain performance experience in a low-pressure, low commitment, super fun way
+ upgrade your current dance skills and learn new styles of movement and expression
+ get your body moving again after peak sloth holiday season!
How to join this opportunity:
Submit your EOI via the short form below. We will be casting the heartbeat ensemble on a rolling basis,
and spots are limited, so get your app in early if you’re keen.
If selected, you then attend one or both workshops to learn the choreography and expand your dance skills.
Both workshops will be different, but both will teach the show choreography.
You can then perform in as many shows as you like (with a minimum of 2 shows required).
Both workshops will be held at Take Care Studios, 1 Pitt street, Brunswick.
All show performances will be held at Meat Market, 3 Blackwood street, North Melbourne.
